Three Steps For Dealing With Tension Headaches At Work

If you tend to deal with tension headaches, it is a good idea to go through with treatment from your doctor and chiropractor to lessen the occurrence. When you are first working on your tension headache issue, you may still have headaches that come on, especially while you are at work. Since stress is one of the major factors that can bring on a tension headache, you may find yourself needing to manage these while at work for a little while. Here are some ways to deal with a tension headache while at your place of work. 

Take down your hair and cool down a little

If you feel the beginnings of a tension headache at work, the first thing that you should do is take your hair down. If have your hair in a ponytail or updo, you should take your hair down immediately. This can contribute to the tightness felt by your head, or make it worse. Once you have your hair down, you should also make sure that you are not overly warm. Being too warm can contribute to headaches as well. Take off your blazer or sit inside of a break room or office backroom that is cool, with a good air flow.  

Sit up straight and stretch

One of the reasons why many people experience tension headaches is due to posture being bad throughout the day. If you are slumped over or if you are constantly bending over at your job, you may notice a tension headache coming on. If all of the signs of a tension headache are showing up, sit or stand up straight. Imagine that a string is being pulled through your body and up to your neck. This will make sure that your body is properly aligned. From here, stretch your neck and arms, and rotate all of the joints in your upper body. This will loosen up any tension that is causing the headache. 

Get away from the noise

When you are dealing with a tension headache onset, it can be made worse by noise. If possible, leave the area of any noise and go into a room that is quiet. If all of the spaces have some level of noise, put on a pair of noise-canceling headphones in order to block out any sound. Be sure that the headphones are not too tight around the top of your head so that the headache is not exacerbated.
